The Civic Awareness Project (CAP) is a three-year community-based project funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada. The overall goal of CAP is to promote the political integration of newcomers in Scarborough by working with them, to increase their participation and knowledge of civic society in Toronto, Ontario, and Canada. CAP aims to achieve this goal by providing the opportunity for newcomers to participate in the CAP Core and CAP Leadership Workshops trainings.

CAP Core is a series of educational and skill building workshops that promote civic literacy and civic engagement by providing knowledge and understanding about Canada’s political systems, the basis for rights and responsibilities, and the integral role of civic engagement in Canadian history and culture through.

CAP Leadership is a hands-on skill building workshop series that is offered to participants who have completed the CAP Core training. Through the CAP Leadership workshops, participants learn about what it takes to be a community leader and they develop their skills so that they may play leadership roles within their communities.

By the end of the project, we hope our participants play a more active and empowered role in shaping the community they live in and participate politically, promoting a rich democracy of inclusion, public discourse and action. We hope participants view civic participation not only as individuals living in a democratic state but also as active members of their communities.
